Vascular Flora of the Southeastern United States : Vol. 3, Part 2: Leguminosae (fabaceae)

Description

Leguminosae, the second of five books to be published in the Vascular Flora of the Southeastern United States series, focuses on one of the most important and largest plant families in the region. The legume or bean family, which includes soybeans, peanuts, redbud, and their relatives, is one of the two plant groups that have made civilization possible. The legumes furnish protein and oil for food and industry and, through bacterial nodules on their roots, maintain the nitrogen balance in the soil. Also included in this plant family are numerous ornamentals, particularly in the southern part of the country. This volume is the first to treat the southeastern legumes in nearly sixty years.Geographical RangeVascular Flora of the Southeastern United States covers the forested region of the southeastern United States west to the prairie and north to the southernmost terminal moraines. This region includes Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Notation of presence in adjacent states of Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey will be made. Also in the series:Volume 1: AsteraceaeVolume 2: Ferns, Gymnosperms, Magnoliidae [not yet published]Volume 3, Part I: Rosidae and Asteridae [not yet published]Volume 4: Liliopsida [not yet published]

What is Mission lays the foundations for an understanding of theology and mission. It explores contemporary issues in mission including the reception of the gospel by different cultures, encounters with other world religions and care of the environment. Finally, it asks what is would mean for the future if the Church were Vascular Flora of the Southeastern United States : Vol. 3, Part 2: Leguminosae (fabaceae) free download pdf to recognise more fully its missionary nature. Within the pages of transformational book, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer reveals how to change the self-defeating thinking patterns that have prevented you from living at the highest levels of success, happiness, and health. Even though you may know what to think, actually changing the destructive thinking habits that have been with you since childhood might be somewhat challenging. Perhaps the following thoughts have, at one time or another, seemed true for you: If I changed, it would create family dramas; I'm too old or too young; I'm far too busy and tired; I can't afford the things I truly want; It would be very difficult for me to do anything differently; and I've always been this way. These thoughts may seem to you like valid reasons for not living your best life, but they are in fact, just excuses. The business of modifying habituated thinking patterns really comes down to tossing out the same tired old excuses and examining your beliefs in a new and truthful light! In this groundbreaking work, Wayne presents a compendium of conscious and subconscious crutches employed by virtually everyone, along with ways to cast them aside once and for all.

Grammaticalization

Description

This is a general introduction to grammaticalization, the change whereby lexical terms and constructions come in certain linguistic contexts to serve grammatical functions, and, once grammaticalized, continue to develop new grammatical functions. The authors synthesize work from several areas of linguistics, including historical linguistics, discourse analysis, and pragmatics. Data are drawn from many languages including Ewe, Finnish, French, Hindi, Hittite, Japanese, Malay, and especially English. This 2003 second edition has been thoroughly revised with substantial updates on theoretical and methodological issues that have arisen in the decade since the first edition, and includes a significantly expanded bibliography. Particular attention is paid to recent debates over directionality in change and the role of grammaticalization in creolization. Grammaticalization will be a valuable and stimulating textbook for all linguists interested in the development of grammatical forms and will also be of interest to readers in anthropology and psychology.

Matthew Beresford: From Demons to Dracula: The Creation of the Modern Vampire Myth

From Demons to Dracula: The Creation of the Modern Vampire Myth

Description

In blood-soaked lore handed down the centuries, the vampire is a monster of endless fascination: from Bram Stoker's "Dracula" to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", this seductive lover of blood haunts popular culture and inhabits our darkest imaginings. The history of the vampire is a compelling tale that is now documented in "From Demons to Dracula", which reveals why the vampire myth and this creature of the undead fascinates us. Beresford's chronicle roams from the mountains of Eastern Europe, to the foggy streets of Victorian England, to Hollywood film, as he investigates the portrayal of the vampire in history, literature and art. Investigating the historical "Dracula", "Vlad the Impaler", and his status as a national hero in Romania, Beresford endeavours to winnow out truths from the complex legend and folklore. "From Demons to Dracula" tracks the evolution of the vampire, drawing on classical Greek and Roman myths, witch trials and medieval plagues, Gothic literature and even contemporary works such as Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire and Elizabeth Kostova's "The Historian". Beresford also looks at the widespread impact of screen vampires from television shows, classic movies starring Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee, and more recent films such as "Underworld" and "Blade". Whether as a demon of the underworld or a light-fearing hunter of humans, the vampire has endured through the centuries, the book reveals, as a powerful symbolic figure for human concerns with life, death and the afterlife. Wide-ranging and engrossing, "From Demons to Dracula" casts this bloodthirsty nightstalker as a remarkably complex and telling totem of our nightmares, real and imagined.

This eclectic mix of surfing tales offers something for everyone, from classic tales of monster waves and epic battles to hilarious anecdotes of what goes on among the breakers. There are stories of death and disaster as well as bravery and triumph. Bizarre and extreme occurrences share space with accounts of perfect breaks and beautiful beaches. Throughout, surfing's greatest figures appear--Laird Hamilton and Tom Curren, the late From Demons to Dracula: The Creation of the Modern Vampire Myth free epub legend Andy Irons and the ironman of surfing, Kelly Slater--alongside the local heroes who never made the headlines. From the UK to the USA, Europe to Australia, these stories from surfing's greatest places and faces will delight everyone who loves the sport. Here, for the first time, are the letters written by the exceedingly proud and stubborn Mr. Darcy, covering the life-changing events that defined him--from the death of his father, to his control of his Derbyshire estate of Pemberley to his conflicted courtship with the lively, intelligent, and delightfully willful Elizabeth Bennet. Try as he may, he cannot deny his attraction to this woman with fine eyes, a playful spirit, a mind of her own... and an embarrassing family that is frankly, and utterly, beneath him. But it is Elizabeth who controls both their destinies, and whose surprises will change Darcy's life yet again.

The African Origin of Civilization: Myth or Reality?

Description

Now in its 30th printing, this classic presents historical, archaeological, and anthropological evidence to support the theory that ancient Egypt was a black civilization.

Our second Scratch and Sketch title is the best gift around for budding artists of all ages! It contains 20 super-cool drawing and design projects, from hieroglyphics to super-heroes to Van Gogh. Use the special wood stylus to create shimmering pieces of original art on holographic foil and rainbow scratch-off The African Origin of Civilization: Myth or Reality? download ebook pages. Let your imagination be the limit! Who was responsible for the design of the Admiral Popov, the circular Russian battleship that wouldn't steer straight? Why did Lord Ansonset out to circumnavigate the world with a crew of Chelsea pensioners? And how did the British cruiser HMS Trinidad manage to torpedo itself in the Arctic. The answers to these questions and details of numerous other entertaining and unbelievable historical events are revealed in this absorbing survey of naval incompetence from Roman times to the Falklands War. Bestselling author Geoffrey Regan certainly sets out to prove that there is truth in the old adage "Worse things happen at sea". Crammed with intriguing and often bizarre anecdotes and over fifty illuminating illustrations, Naval Blunders takes a serious, but often entertaining look at the misjudgements and oversights of captains, fleet commanders, strategic planners and ship designers over the ages. Peppered with quotes from those who did their utmost (albeit unwittingly) to hinder naval progress, this entertaining and instructive book will appeal to the naval enthusiast and general reader alike.

These health problems are linked to a tiny protein fragment that is formed when we digest A1 beta-casein, a milk protein produced by many cows in the Lonely Planet New York City download PDF United States and northern European countries. Milk that contains A1 beta-casein is commonly known as A1 milk; milk that does not is called A2. All milk was once A2, until a genetic mutation occurred some thousands of years ago in some European cattle. A2 milk remains high in herds in much of Asia, Africa, and parts of Southern Europe. A1 milk is common in the United States, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe. In Devil in the Milk, Keith Woodford brings together the evidence published in more than 100 scientific papers. He examines the population studies that look at the link between consumption of A1 milk and the incidence of heart disease and Type 1 diabetes; he explains the science that underpins the A1/A2 hypothesis; and he examines the research undertaken with animals and humans. The evidence is compelling: We should be switching to A2 milk. A2 milk from selected cows is now marketed in parts of the U.S., and it is possible to convert a herd of cows producing A1 milk to cows producing A2 milk. This is an amazing story, one that is not just about the health issues surrounding A1 milk, but also about how scientific evidence can be molded and withheld by vested interests, and how consumer choices are influenced by the interests of corporate business.

Description

Based on John Gay's eighteenth century Beggar's Opera, The Threepenny Opera, first staged in 1928 at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm in Berlin, is a vicious satire on the bourgeois capitalist society of the Weimar Republic, but set in a mock-Victorian Soho. It focuses on the feud between Macheaf - an amoral criminal - and his father in law, a racketeer who controls and exploits London's beggars and is intent on having Macheaf hanged. Despite the resistance by Macheaf's friend the Chief of Police, Macheaf is eventually condemned to hang until in a comic reversal the queen pardons him and grants him a title and land. With Kurt Weill's unforgettable music - one of the earliest and most successful attempts to introduce jazz to the theatre - it became a popular hit throughout the western world. Published in Methuen Drama's Modern Classics series in a trusted translation by Ralph Manheim and John Willett, this edition features extensive notes and commentary including an introduction to the play, Brecht's own notes on the play, a full appendix of textual variants, a note by composer Kurt Weill, a transcript of a discussion about the play between Brecht and a theatre director, plus editorial notes on the genesis of the play.

Intentional Living: Choosing a Life That Matters

Description

We all have a longing to be significant. We want to make a contribution, to be a part of something noble and purposeful. But many people wrongly believe significance is unattainable. They worry that it's too big for them to achieve. That they have to have an amazing idea, be a certain age, have a lot of money, or be powerful or famous to make a real difference. The good news is that none of those things is necessary for you to achieve significance and create a lasting legacy. The only thing you need to achieve significance is to be intentional. And to do that, all you need to do is start. You can't make an impact sitting still and doing nothing. Every major accomplishment that's ever been achieved started with a first step. Sometimes it's hard; other times it's easy, but no matter what, you have to do it if you want to get anywhere in life. In INTENTIONAL LIVING, John Maxwell will help you take that first step, and the ones that follow, on your personal path through a life that matters.

'Over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign.' To this 'one very simple principle' the whole of Mill's essay On Liberty is dedicated. While many of his immediate predecessors and contemporaries, from Adam Smith to Godwin and Thoreau, had celebrated liberty, it was Mill who organized the idea into a philosophy, and put it into the form in which it is generally known today. The editor of this essay, Gertrude Himmelfarb records responses to Mill's books and comments on his fear of 'the tyranny of the majority'. Dr Himmelfarb concludes that the same inconsistencies which underlie On Liberty continue to complicate the moral and political stance of liberals today.

Is Israel worth saving, and if so, how do we secure its future? The Jewish State must end, say its enemies, from intellectuals like Tony Judt to hate-filled demagogues like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Even average Israelis are wondering if they wouldn't be better off somewhere else and whether they ought to persevere. Daniel Gordis is On Liberty pdf confident his fellow Jews can renew their faith in the cause, and in "Saving Israel," he outlines how.2009 National Jewish Book Award winnerAddresses the most pressing issues faced by Israel-and American Jews-today, without recycling the same old argumentsLays to rest some of the most pernicious myths about Israel, including: Jews could thrive without Israel; Israeli Arabs just want equality, and Palestinians just want their own state; peace will come, if Israel will just do the right things""Morally powerful ." . ." from a writer whose reflections are consistently as intellectually impressive as they are moving. . . . Gordis addresses the exigencies of our time with the urgency they overridingly demand, and with the depth of feeling they inspire.""-Cynthia OzickGordis has written many popular personal essays and memoirs in the past, but "Saving Israel" is a full-throated call to arms. Never has the case for defending-no, celebrating-the existence of Israel been so clear, so passionate, or so worthy of wholehearted support.

Dr Konstantin Korotkov: Science Confirms Reconnective Healing: Frontier Science Experiments

Science Confirms Reconnective Healing: Frontier Science Experiments

Description

This book describes results of different experiments and clinical trials exploring the effects of Reconnective Healing. Experiments during three years demonstrated that sessions of Reconnection Healing had statistically significant positive influence on the functional state, humoral activity, physical condition and reaction to loading for the group of people both immediately and in 10 days after the influence. This signifies long-lasting effect of Reconnection Healing and its significance for people's health and well-being. Reconnective Healing does not invoke a relaxation response in the person, but decreases both sympathetic and parasympathetic stimulation of the autonomic nervous system, as observed when a person is in a state of emotional detachment, inner quiet and heightened awareness of the flow of subtle energy. These physiological responses are compatible with the Reconnective Healing principle of sensing and kinesthetically interacting with energy fields, as well as passively allowing the energy to flow through the body. One special effect of Reconnective Healing is structurization of Space in the auditorium, which affects all people present.

In his autobiography Interesting Times: A Twentieth Century Life, published in 2002 when he was eighty-five years old, the historian Eric Hobsbawm (1917-2012) wrote that Latin America was the only region of the world outside Europe which he felt he knew Science Confirms Reconnective Healing: Frontier Science Experiments free ebook well and where he felt entirely at home. He claimed this was because it was the only part of the Third World whose two principal languages, Spanish and Portuguese, were within his reach. But he was also, of course, attracted by the potential for social revolution in Latin America. After the triumph of Fidel Castro in Cuba in January 1959, and even more after the defeat of the American attempt to overthrow him at the Bay of Pigs in April 1961, 'there was not an intellectual in Europe or the USA', he wrote, 'who was not under the spell of Latin America, a continent apparently bubbling with the lava of social revolutions'. The Third World 'brought the hope of revolution back to the First in the 1960s'. The two great international inspirations were Cuba and Vietnam, 'triumphs not only of revolution, but of Davids against Goliaths, of the weak against the all-powerful'.

Living with the Dead

Description

Smart, sexy, and supernatural the men and women of the Otherworld live unseen among us. For the most part, mere mortals never suspect their existence and that s the way they want it. But now a reckless killer has torn down the wall between our worlds, trapping one very vulnerable, and very mortal, woman in the supernatural cross fire. Robyn Peltier moved to Los Angeles shortly after her young husband s sudden and unexpected death. Her hope was that her hectic new life as the PR consultant to a spoiled celebutante would provide a distraction from her grief. But when her client is murdered, Robyn finds herself on the run as the prime suspect. And as more bodies pile up around her, it seems only her friend, tabloid journalist Hope Adams, is on her side. But Hope and her somewhat spooky boyfriend Karl know it s just a matter of time before Robyn is caught. For she s gotten herself in the middle of a turf war between two Otherworld races who ll spill any amount of blood human and inhuman to protect what they consider theirs for eternity. And the only way Hope can save her friend is by letting her enter a world she s safer knowing nothing about."

An ancient bridge collapses over a gorge in Peru, hurling five people into the abyss. It seems a meaningless human tragedy. But one witness, a Franciscan monk, believes the deaths might not be as random as they appear. Convinced that the disaster is a punishment sent from Heaven, the monk sets out to discover all he can about the travellers. The five strangers were connected in some way, he thinks. There must be a purpose behind their deaths. But are their lost lives the result of sin? ...Or of love? In her inspiring "New York Times" bestselling memoir, "It Was Me All Along," Andie Mitchell chronicled her struggles with obesity, losing weight, and finding balance. Now, in her debut cookbook, she gives readers the dishes that helped her reach her goals and maintain her new size. In 80 recipes, she shows how she eats: mostly healthy meals that are packed with flavor, like Lemon Roasted Chicken with Moroccan Couscous and Butternut Squash Salad with Kale and Pomegranate, and then the sometimes foods, the indulgences such as Peanut Butter Mousse Pie with Marshmallow Whipped Cream, because life just Living with the Dead free download pdf needs dessert. With 75 photographs and Andie s beautiful storytelling, "Eating in the Middle" is the perfect cookbook for anyone looking to find freedom from cravings while still loving and enjoying every meal to the fullest."
